Music is the ‘lingo franco’ of the world, and like prayer they are a part of our mental and physical anatomy which we can’t easily explain or even understand how they work. Thankfully we can all just get on with these activities regardless of what other people think or feel about them.
Here is a video, made known to me by Mark Tweddle, a music teacher from Glasshouse. It’s a TED Talk (We love TED Talk’s) which explains that playing music is really good for you, and makes you smarter. – Much Smarter
A fantastic little video made by educator Anita Collins and animator Sharon Colman Graham for TED-Ed. What they explain is that while listening to music is beneficial, playing music is “the brain’s equivalent of a full-body workout.”
So Dads and Mums, during the summer holidays why not encourage your kids to attend one of the Holiday Music Workshops around the coast, or to pick up that instrument lying around the home, or at the very least to listen to good music. You are unlikely to hear good music between the adverts on the Radio or Australian Idol, you need to use apps like Pandora or Spotify which allow you to select and explore different styles of music.
